New A.C. Casino Puts Time Limit on Employee Contracts

A unique policy from the highly anticipated Revel Casino-Resort is causing a mixed reaction among casino workers.

The highly anticipated Revel Casino-Resort is set to open its doors in Atlantic City in less than three months.

But along with new slot machines at Atlantic City’s newest casino comes a new and unique employment policy. Some employees will have time limits on their contract and have to reapply for their jobs after a specific amount of time.

The policy applies to workers who have a lot of interaction with the public, such as car valets, waitresses and casino dealers. Dealers for example will have to reapply for their position after six years.

Reaction towards the policy has been mixed.

“Your contract runs out and you don’t know if you have your job back? Your livelihood is at stake,” said Nick Porier, a valet.

A spokesperson for Revel told NBC 10 that the contract policy was implemented to “keep employees on their toes, sharp and at the top of their game.”

“That’s a good point,” said Porier in response to the spokesperson.

“I don’t think that’s a good argument,” said casino employee Linda Robertson. “When you get a job you expect to be on it as long as possible. You expect long term. How could you get into anything? A house, a car, anything?”

While the new policy is unpopular with some, it hasn’t stopped the hundreds of people who have already agreed to work under Revel’s terms. Industry experts also say that while Revel is the first it won’t be the last casino in Atlantic City to offer such a contract.
