Philly Police Officer Shot in Leg

A wounded Philadelphia police officer went home from the hospital Friday, one day after being shot in the leg.

Detective Albert Ford and another officer were serving a warrant Thursday morning at a home in North Philly. They'd just confronted a fugitive wanted in connection with a shooting last year.

Police say when Kevin Robinson, 25, realized he was facing two policemen, he stepped back into the house, spun around and fired a semi-automatic, hitting Officer Ford in the leg.

Police fired back, hit Robinson in the head and killed him.

Detective Ford, 42, has been on the force nearly half his life. He's married and a father of four.

Ford spent the night at Temple Hospital and was released Friday with his family at his side.

Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross, who briefed reporters, said, "It's a wonderful thing when an officer who was struck by gunfire can actually be the one making the call to his family."

Ross said much like the Officer Pawlowski shooting, the suspect fired from a vantage point on his body where it was difficult for police to even see the gun.

The shooting happened around noon in the 17-hundred block of Indiana Street in North Philadelphia.

When the cops knocked on his door, the suspect may have thought he was getting his stimulus check from the government, but by the time he opened fire, police say he knew he was aiming at a police officer. You can watch the video below for more on that part of the story:
