NJ Teacher Sentenced for Having Sex With Student

Authorities learned of relationship after a tip from another student

A southern New Jersey teacher who had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student is sentenced to seven years in state prison.

Michael Drebes, a 38-year-old Millville resident, was arrested last year after he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl and a former female student on multiple occasions between February and May 2009.

Authorities learned of the relationship after receiving a tip from a student who knew the 14-year-old girl.

Drebes, a math teacher at Memorial High School who taught in the Millville school system for five years, pleaded guilty in January to official misconduct and sexual assault as part of a plea bargain with Cumberland County prosecutors.

Under the sentence imposed Friday, he will serve five years before becoming eligible for parole.
