NJ State Police Assign More Troopers to Camden

New Jersey state police say more troopers have been assigned to Camden to bolster the city's police department, which is expected to be dismantled and replaced by a county-run force.

New Jersey state police say more troopers have been assigned to Camden to bolster the city's police department, which is expected to be dismantled and replaced by a county-run force.

Lt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman, wouldn't say how many troopers were involved in the move. But he told the Courier-Post they will remain in the city at least through the holiday season and will be deployed to hot spots based on police intelligence.

Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson disclosed the troopers' arrival during a news conference Friday, where he discussed the planned layoff of nearly 270 city officers to make way for the county force.

State police already have a year-round presence in Camden, a city that has long struggled with violence.
