NJ Road Worker Killed in Highway Accident

Authorities: Charges are pending in crash

A New Jersey road worker was killed Monday while trying to help a stranded driver.

Emergency Service Patrol Operator Joseph Kealey was standing on the shoulder of I-76 East in Bellmawr, N.J. when a white Dodge Magnum careened off the roadway and into the man and his truck, NJDOT officials said.

The 45-year-old father of two was rushed to Copper University Hospital, but was unable to be saved.

N.J. State Police took the driver of the car -- a 28-year-old woman -- into custody after the crash. Charges are pending, officials said. They believe the woman may have been under the influence of drugs, alcohol or something else.

"That's what were trying to figure out....we don't know if it was texting or anything of that nature," said Trooper Christian Sime.

There is no word on if the stranded motorist was injured.
