The Republican National Convention broke into a celebration Tuesday when the New Jersey delegation registered all 50 of its delegate votes to nominate Mitt Romney for president.

The former Massachusetts governor needed 1,144 votes to be nominated. The New Jersey vote put him over the top with 1,150 votes.

Earlier, the delegation from Delaware cast its 17 votes for Romney. Later, as the roll call continued, the Pennsylvania delegation led by Gov. Tom Corbett (R), cast 67 of its delegate votes for Romney, the rest went to Ron Paul, although Corbett may have actually said “Paul Ryan,” in a possible slip of the tongue.

The New Jersey delegation moved up in stature before the convention opened when Gov. Chris Christie was tapped to deliver the all-important keynote address on Tuesday night.

A poll released Tuesday showed 46 percent of New Jersey voters don’t expect the governor’s speech to change the nation’s perception of the state, while 32 percent think it may help. The Rutgers-Eagleton poll was conducted with 916 registered voters.
