Guess what happens to people who shun MTV “Jersey Shore” spinoffs? They get awards.
An Italian-American organization fed-up with the way MTV’s “Jersey Shore” portrays its ethnicity is giving the mayor of Hoboken an award for rejecting the network’s request to film a spinoff in her city, reports The Jersey Journal.
The Italian-American One Voice coalition will be presenting Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer with the group’s “Una Voice” award Wednesday night.
“MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ has been a blight on the State of New Jersey as well as an insult to all Italian-Americans,” the group’s president Andre' DiMino said in a statement, reports The Jersey Journal.
Zimmer says the decision to deny permits was made based on safety and quality of life concerns for residents of Hoboken.
After Zimmer rejected MTV, Jersey City rolled out the welcome mat for the reality series featuring Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley.
“Why would any community want to be associated with the bad acts, lewdness, inebriation, violence against women, crudeness and other garbage spewed by this trash programming,” DiMino said, according to the Jersey Journal. “Mayor Zimmer . . . has done the right thing for Hoboken and should be commended.”
This isn’t the first time a city has given MTV’s “guidos and guidettes” the cold shoulder. During its season in Italy, the city of Florence forbade the GTL (gym/tan/laundry) crew from entering any of the city’s museums or historic landmarks.
“[Florence] is preparing to accept with a certain coldness and fear the phenomenon of the Jersey Shore,” Superintendent of the state museums of Florence, Cristina Acidini, said at the time.
Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy says he believes the show is an opportunity to promote the city, reports the Associated Press. Filming is expected to begin later this month in the city's Grove Street Path neighborhood.
