Nolvin Garcia had pleaded guilty in July to charges of aggravated manslaughter and attempted murder in the August 2012 killing of Jacques Nelson. The 32-year-old father of four was shot to death outside Misty's Restaurant when he tried to intervene in a dispute.

The 25-year-old Garcia is a citizen of Honduras who faces deportation after he serves his sentence. He must serve 85 percent of his term he received Tuesday before he becomes eligible for parole.

Garcia was arrested in Texas a week after the murder as he tried to cross the Mexican border.
