Gay couples say New Jersey is standing in the way of their getting benefits made available by the federal government.
A judge heard arguments Thursday from lawyers for the couples and for the state on whether New Jersey must allow gay marriages. The judge says she will rule no earlier than September.
A lawyer for the state says couples united in civil unions can obtain some federal benefits even if New Jersey doesn't allow gay marriage.
The lawyer says it's the federal government's fault, not the state's, if some of those couples are being denied certain federal benefits.
