NJ Doctor Admits Getting $1.8M in Kickbacks

Federal prosecutors say a northern New Jersey doctor has admitted accepting $1.8 million in bribes to refer millions of dollars in business to a medical lab company

Frank Santangelo pleaded guilty Wednesday to a complaint charging him with violating the travel act, money laundering and failing to file tax returns. The 43-year-old Boonton faces up to 26 years in prison when he's sentenced.

Prosecutors say the bribes were part of a long-running scheme operated by Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services, its president and numerous associates. They say the company bribed doctors to refer patients and perform unnecessary tests, reaping millions of dollars.

Santangelo has offices in Montville and Wayne. Prosecutors say he received bribes for referrals for which the lab was paid more than $6 million by Medicare and various insurers.
