NJ Attorney General Asks for Gay Marriage Suit Dismissal

The state government says the legal issue has already been settled.

New Jersey's Attorney General's Office is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to force the state to recognize gay marriage.

Friday's hearing in Trenton will be the first over a lawsuit filed in June by seven couples and many of their children.

They say the state's civil unions fall short of creating equality for same-sex couples as ordered by the state Supreme Court five years ago.

The state government denies that and says the suit should be dismissed because the legal issue is already settled.
