Music Festival Jams Delaware Roads

If you are heading to the Firefly Festival or the beaches of Delaware, be prepared for heavy traffic this weekend

Traffic has been backed up since this morning on Route 1 and Route 13 southbound, as people head to the Firefly Music Festival in Dover or to the shore for the weekend.

A spokesman for DelDOT says this heavy traffic is not unexpected.

"This is a big event on a scale the size of a NASCAR race.  DelDOT, police agencies and event organizers have been talking with the state’s media about likely attendance and traffic for weeks preceding the festival, so traffic delays associated with the event - while unpleasant - should have been anticipated by most motorists," said Jim Westhoff, DelDOT.

The Firefly Music Festival is a three-day event happening at the Woodlands of Dover International Speedway. More than 70 groups will perform, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the Lumineers.

"This weekend, patience will definitely be a virtue among all road users in the Dover area,” said Westhoff.
