“Mummy Bandit” Pleads Guilty in Bank Heists

Adams faces up to 100 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines

A Philadelphia man dubbed "the mummy bandit" for using gauze bandages to conceal his face has pleaded guilty in five bank heists.

Federal prosecutors say 45-year-old Hiram Joseph Adams is the man behind the mummy mask.

They say he also wore a doctor's coat, scrub hat and stethoscope in a June holdup in suburban Wyndmoor. An FBI affidavit says that robbery netted just $568.

Prosecutors say Adams pleaded guilty Wednesday to four bank robberies and the attempted robbery of a fifth since January 2009.

All of the banks are in or near Philadelphia.

Adams faces up to 100 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines at his scheduled Feb. 17 sentencing.

Public defender Kai Scott did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.
