Alleged Drunk Driver Charged in Trolley Vs. Car Crash

A Haverford Township man faces a variety of charges after police say he left a car on the tracks

A Haverford Township man faces a variety of charges after police say he left a car on the tracks. Then an oncoming trolley crashed into that car early Thursday morning, injuring two dozen people.

It happened around 5 a.m. on 1400 Edgewood Road near the Beechwood/Brookline Station in Haverford Township.

Police say Brian Manning, 29, told them that he became disoriented while driving home. When he ended up in a SEPTA station parking lot, police say he tried to turn around but part of his car became stuck on the tracks.

Instead of calling police, investigators say Manning called AAA to get a tow. By then it was too late.  A trolley on SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line crashed into the vehicle.

24 people on the trolley suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Police later found Manning and say he was on his iPhone looking for SEPTA's number to alert them.

Manning is a special education teacher at Upper Darby High School, sources told NBC Philadelphia.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and reckless endangerment.

SEPTA says normal service has resumed to the Norristown High Speed Line.
