Del. Civil Rights Leader Dies

Governor orders state flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Maurice Moyer

State flags in Delware were lowered to half-staff in honor of a longtime civil rights leader who died Tuesday.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell ordered the flags to fly at half-staff beginning Wednesday morning in honor of the Rev. Maurice Moyer.

The 93-year-old Moyer was the former head of the Wilmington branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church.

Moyer was a long-time civil rights advocate who marched with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and called out discriminatory practices in Delaware, according to Delaware Online.

“Few in their lives awaken as many hearts and minds, inspire as many to action or knit as strongly so many social bonds as Rev. Moyer,” Markell said. “I’m honored to have known him.”

Delaware Online reports that a service for Moyer will be held Friday at Community Presbyterian Church on Rogers Road in New Castle. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with an Alpha Phi Alpha service to follow and the funeral at 6 p.m. Burial will be private.
