More Police to Patrol Newark School After Fights

A series of violent fights among students at Newark High School is leading to a larger police presence there next week.

Police say recent incidents at the school include a girl who was beaten in the cafeteria, a student who was stunned with a Taser by the school's on-site officer and an attack by seven students in which a classmate suffered a concussion and a broken nose.

Police Lt. Mark Farrall tells the News Journal that more officers will be at the school in coming days to prevent violence. He says the incidents, which the superintendent has called “alarming,” appear to be unrelated.

School principal Curtis Bedford says students have been disciplined for the fights, but would not say if they had been suspended or expelled or give other details.
