A security worker opened fire on a co-worker Monday in Moorestown, New Jersey and then killed himself.

The gunman was provoked by an "ongoing domestic situation," according to Moorestown police.

The gunfire rang out around 7 a.m., as Edgar Figueroa and Melvin Nieves were starting their shifts at Shields Business Solutions along Twoshome Drive — less than a mile from the Moorestown police department.

Figueroa, 42, allegedly shot Nieves four times, went outside and shot himself to death in the rear parking lot of the business park where Shields is located.

The two men are both from Philadelphia, police said. Nieves, 31, is in critical condition at Cooper University Hospital.

"The gentleman that was getting shot obviously tried to flee, and this gentlemen chased him through the building, and it worked its way out back," said Moorestown Police Lt. Lee Lieber.

Shields is a company that services ATMs, protects vaults and offers armored car services, according to the company's website.

Police did not say if the two men worked in the same armored truck.

Officers from surrounding communities including Mount Laurel and Maple Shade also responded to the scene.
