Maker of Marlboro Cigarettes to Close Montco Manufacturing Facility

Altria, the makers of Marlboro, Virginia Slims and Parliament cigarettes, said it would close two manufacturing facilities in Limerick, Pennsylvania and Franklin Park, Illinois by early 2018.

The Associated Press reports that about 580 workers would be affected, including 280 in Limerick.

About 200 jobs in different states — where the work is being consolidated — will be available to those employees if they wish to transfer. Those who do not transfer will be given six months of severance, benefits and free job training.

Altria (NYSE: MO) subsidiary The John Middleton Co. will transfer its Limerick operations to the company's manufacturing center site in Richmond, Virginia. The business was sold to Altria in 2007 by Philadelphia Phillies part-owner John Middleton for $2.9 billion. It makes Black & Mild cigars, Middleton’s Cherry Blend pipe tobacco and other products.
