Mom Accused of Trying to Poison Family With Burritos Enters Rehab Program

An eastern Pennsylvania woman charged with serving her husband and daughter burritos laced with prescription medicine has been accepted into a rehabilitation program for first-time non-violent offenders.

The Express-Times reports 42-year-old Ann Marie Haines of Lower Macungie Township said the May incident was the result of being over-medicated for bipolar disorder and manic depression.

Investigators say Haines was upset that she hadn't been invited to join her husband and daughter as they went car shopping. She allegedly crushed up some of her pills in black-bean burritos she served.

Her husband and daughter noticed the food tasted funny and complained of feeling ill.

Lehigh County Judge William Ford said the first-time offenders program is normally for lesser crimes but the two victims and the prosecuting state trooper agreed to it.
