Mom Accused of Killing 5 Babies to Plead Guilty

A Reading woman suspected of killing five newborn babies, and keeping their remains in a closet, is ready to plead guilty.

After pleading “not guilty” in December 2010, 44-year-old Michele Kalina is set for a plea and sentencing hearing on June 2, according to court documents.

Kalina was arrested in August 2010 after her husband and teenage daughter discovered the baby remains in summer coolers and a cement-filled container in a closet of the family apartment July 29.

Investigators say Kalina killed the infants between 1996 and 2010 to cover up extramarital pregnancies. Kalina also bore a daughter from the same affair in 2003 but gave the baby up for adoption, authorities say.

According to police, the boyfriend did not know about Kalina’s pregnancies.

Kalina was a nursing assistant who worked with elderly patients. She had 14 years of a stable work history with no maternity or extended medical leaves, but she told police she was prone to alcoholic black outs.

Lawyers aren't commenting because of a gag order, reports the Associated Press.

Kalina is charged with homicide, abuse of corpse and other charges.
