ACLU Sues Delaware Town for Making Woman Take Down Trump Protest Signs

Penny Nickerson says in February, a code enforcement officer with the town of Milton said her brightly colored signs, with sayings like "Love Trumps Hate" and "No Wall No Ban" qualified as political speech.

A Delaware woman says her town's code enforcement department ordered her to take down four signs she put in her front yard after the 2016 election.

Penny Nickerson says in February, a code enforcement officer with the town of Milton said her brightly colored signs, with sayings like "Love Trumps Hate" and "No Wall No Ban" qualified as political speech.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that according to the town code, signs deemed political must be removed within two weeks of vote-casting.

Nickerson contacted the ACLU of Delaware. The group has sued the town of Milton on Nickerson's behalf, alleging the town cannot limit a message on a sign because of an arbitrary decision make that the message is political.

Milton's town attorney did not comment on the complaint.
