St. Joe's women take home bronze

Michigan used a favorable current to win the school's second Richard O'Brien trophy and end a two-year run by Big Ten rival Purdue on Saturday at the 71st Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Wolverines won the men's varsity heavyweight 8 in 5:54.4 and tied with Delaware for most points in the men's races with 20.

Purdue, which won in 2007 and 2008, came in second in 5:57.694.

In the women's division, Grand Valley won its first Evelyn Bergman Trophy in 6:41.2. Buffalo and hometown favorite St. Joseph's finished second and third respectively and Buffalo had the most points in women's races with 30.

The Dad Vail Regatta features more than 3,000 rowers from more than 120 schools in the United States and Canada.

2009 marks the 56th year the regatta has been held in Philly.
