Methacton Community Theater to Host Open Auditions

As they prepare for the production of “Oliver” on July 18, 19, 25, and 26, The Methacton Community Theater is already starting to look to the future. It’s next production of “The Producers” will be hosting auditions in early August.

Since 1977, the organization has produced over 100 musicals, dramas and comedies which they aim to entertain for all ages, “from the very young to the young at heart,” according to the MCT website.

The current president of MCT, Jude Adams, said that the organization is always looking for new faces. Currently, the community theater is in search of:

  • New actors
  • Stage veterans
  • Directors
  • Lighting and sound specialists
  • Costume design and management
  • Make-up and effects
  • Stage craftsman
  • Back-stage support (stage manage, concessions, box office, greeters)
  • Audience members

“Whether you simply enjoy sitting back and watching a great production, are a new talent and want to unleash your potential on the world, are returning to the stage, or want to try your hand for the first time in this thing called ‘community theater,’ MCT welcomes you,” said Adams on the site.

Auditions for “The Producers” will be held on Aug. 3, 5 and 7. The Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan production also includes music and lyrics by Brooks. It is aimed to be directed by Deb Schrager. It is produced by Michelle Miller, Lauren Franz, and Loretta Rurode, while musical direction will be supervised by Tom Wexler. Choreography is by Sally Rothschild.

The musical, described as a story on “a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant.”

“[The two] come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history by bilking their backers out of millions of dollars,” said the MCT site. “Only one thing goes wrong: the show is a smash hit. ‘The Producers’ sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor.”

The show will take the MCT stage on Nov. 7, 8, 14 and 15. Each performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will begin at 2 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 16.

Performances take place at the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater, 10000 Shannondell Blvd., in Audubon.

Auditions will be held at the following times:

  • Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Callbacks on Aug. 10 at 1 p.m.

For a full description of the needed roles to be filled, including leads Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, visit the MCT website here. Many roles include males between ages 25 and 60, while females are needed from 20 to 35, as well as a “Hold-Me-Touch-Me” role for a “feisty little old lady who has the hots for Max.” Several “ensemble” roles, especially for those of tap dancers, are needed.

Actors should be age 16 and over, due to the “adult humor” involved in the production.
