Mental Health Clinic Tech Steals Patient Information for Fake Taxes

A technician at a West Philadelphia mental health clinic has been convicted of stealing patient information and selling it to schemers filing bogus tax returns.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported a jury found 43-year-old Jean Baptiste Alvarez guilty on Thursday of conspiracy, fraud and identity theft charges.

Federal prosecutors said the Aldan man smuggled patient log-in sheets under his clothes as he left work each night from the Kirkbride Center, 245-bed inpatient facility. The papers netted him $1,000 a page and included patient names and Social Security numbers.

Witnesses said the schemers used the information Alvarez stole between 2012 and 2015 to file at least 49 fake tax returns.

Alvarez faces a mandatory minimum of two years behind bars when he's sentenced in July.
