Medical Center Settles With Family of Dead Teen

Court records show Beebe Healthcare in Lewes has reached a settlement with relatives of a 14-year-old girl who died after she became unable to breathe while inside a locked hospital bathroom.

Christina Atkins died in May 2011 after she was taken to Beebe with a blood infection.

The lawsuit said she was asked to provide a urine sample, and she started gasping for air while inside the locked bathroom. It took more than 10 minutes for hospital staff to get to her, at which point she was unresponsive.

Attorney James Hall tells The News Journal of Wilmington that Christina's family has agreed to a resolution that includes monetary compensation.

The Atkinses are also pressing Delaware lawmakers to pass a bill requiring hospitals to give staff quick access to keys.
