7-Year-Old Saves Brother From Icy Waters

Boy, 7, saves brother after fall through ice in NJ

A happy ending in Margate, N.J. Sunday after a young boy helped rescue his brother from the icy waters of the back bay.

Tristian Lavin, 7, jumped into action after his 10-year-old brother Sage fell through the frozen bay and into the water Monday, authorities said.

The brothers took boogie boards onto the bay and were standing on the ice when it gave way under Sage, police said.

Tristian quickly grabbed his big brother and held on tight even as Sage's water soaked clothes made him heavier and heavier.

"My jacket, my big jacket soaked up most of the water so, I was pretty heavy," Sage said as he stood next to his little brother. "Usually he can just pick me up."

Tristian said he was afraid that his brother would die if he left to call for help.

"If I let go, um, he would drown because, I'll be gone for too long," he said.

Luckily, the neighbor's dog started barking when Sage fell through, prompting their neighbor to call police.

Authorities wrapped Sage in blankets and he was taken to a hospital before returning home.
