A Philadelphia man has been ordered to stand trial in the beating death of his 82-year-old mother.
Sixty-three-year-old Adegbola Ige is charged with murder and possession of an instrument of crime in the May 6 death of Esther Ayodele Ige in his Germantown row house. Authorities allege that he abused and beat his mother with an electric cord over an extended period of time.
The Philadelphia Inquirer says Assistant District Attorney Deborah Watson-Stokes on Tuesday called her death “one of the most brutal I've ever seen.”
Detective Timothy Scally said the defendant told him that his mother had a violent temper, and other relatives refused to help care for her even though he had had a stroke.
Defense attorney Michael Wallace suggested that some injuries could have been caused by something other than abuse.
