A man must stand trial on charges that his passenger was killed when his wave runner was swept over an Ohio River dam near Pittsburgh.
Twenty-seven-year-old Kevin Ludwig, of Robinson Township, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday on charges including homicide by watercraft and several safe boating violations.
Ludwig had just begun dating 24-year-old Melissa Mason when they were swept over the Dashields Dam in Edgeworth, just west of the city, in May 2012.
Ludwig was thrown free of the churning water at the base of the dam, but Mason was submerged by the undertow for several minutes and drowned before fishermen who rescued Ludwig also pulled her from the water.
Defense attorney Francis Rapp Jr. called the death a "very, very tragic accident'' but says Ludwig didn't commit a crime.
