Man Struck, Killed by State Police Vehicle

A man is dead after police say he was struck and killed by a state police vehicle.

On Saturday, shortly after 4 a.m., police say Robert Smith, 49, of Wilmington tried to walk across the westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway, just east of Farrand Drive in Wilmington, Delaware.

As Smith crossed, police say he was struck and killed by a 2006, fully marked Ford Crown Victoria driven by a 43-year-old Delaware State Trooper. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The State Trooper was not injured.

Police suspect that Smith was intoxicated though this has not yet been confirmed. Kirkwood Highway was closed for a little over three hours but has since been reopened. Officials continue to investigate.
