Man Sentenced to Life in Central Pa. Slaying

A central Pennsylvania man sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole in the slaying of his estranged girlfriend last year is maintaining his innocence.

Thirty-seven-year-old Kevin Souffrant said in Lancaster County Court on Thursday that he had prayed that justice would prevail "but unfortunately it didn't.''

Lancaster News reports that Judge Dennis Reinaker called Souffrant's comments "nothing but offensive and cowardly.''

A jury convicted Souffrant of first-degree murder in the March 2013 death of 21-year-old Shadae Taylor-Brooks, the mother of his child.

Prosecutors said she was beat, sexually assaulted, shot and strangled months after the couple broke up.

Crystal Brooks, the victim's mother, said the murder has crushed the family. She said "It feels like half of our hearts are ripped out of our chests.''
