Man Sentenced for Stabbing Wife to Death

A southern New Jersey man who fatally stabbed his wife during a domestic dispute has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Sixty-seven-year-old William Carter of Vineland will have to serve roughly 15 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday. And once he's freed, Carter will have to serve five years of supervised release.

Carter had pleaded guilty last month to aggravated manslaughter in the death of 56-year-old Sharon Carter, who was killed inside the couple's home in June 2010. Authorities say one of Sharon Carter's sons and her father found her body after breaking through a barricaded door.

Carter initially faced murder charges, but Cumberland County prosecutors eventually agreed to a plea bargain.
