Man Sentenced for Hot Coffee Assault

A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to 11 and a half to 23 months in prison for throwing scalding coffee on a doughnut shop worker, causing second-degree burns and permanent scarring to her arms.

Fifty-four-year-old David Timbers apologized to the victim Tuesday before being sentenced for the May 2012 attack that stemmed from a dispute over his bill.

Surveillance video from inside the Fresh Donut shop on Lancaster Avenue last year, shows Timbers throwing hot coffee on a worker while saying "Take that."

Police say the dispute began when the clerk questioned Timbers as to whether he paid for his breakfast sandwich.

The donut shop employee suffered burns on her arm.

Timbers will be released during daytime to work to pay $1,100 restitution to cashier Sokchea Luy, a Cambodian immigrant who told the court that her scars bring shame to her family.

The judge also ordered Timbers to undergo anger-management counseling and said he may not stop taking his medications for mental illness without doctor approval.

Timbers pleaded guilty to assault and related charges.

"I just want to ask that if she can find it in her heart to forgive me, not to forget, just to forgive because what I did was unforgiveable and I'd just like to say I'm truly sorry and I made a mistake," Timbers told NBC10 at his preliminary hearing back in 2012.
