Man Poses as Cop in Philly Robbery: Police

A 23-year-old man flashed a silver badge and handcuffs before trying to rob two men, police say

A 23-year-old man has been arrested after flashing a badge and patting down two men on a Philadelphia basketball court, police say.

Christopher Cruz, of the 4300 block of North Palmetto Street, identified himself as a police officer and demanded that two men sitting at a Juniata basketball court at Cayuga Street put their hands in the air Tuesday night, police say.

Cruz had showed a silver badge and handcuffs before he removed a wallet from one of the 28-year-old men. He then returned the wallet without taking anything, police say.

Cruz then left the area in a light blue Toyota Camry. Police say the two men followed in their own car while calling 911.

Police stopped Cruz at 8:24 p.m. at C and West Moreland streets. Police say Cruz had a gun in his car, handcuffs and a fake badge when he was arrested.

Police are not sure if the police badge is real, nor do they know where Cruz got it.

Cruz is charged with attempted robbery, attempted theft, gun-related charges, and impersonating an officer.
