Man Pleads Guilty in Baby's Shaking Death

A southern New Jersey man has admitted that he fatally shook a friend's infant son last year.

The Press of Atlantic City reports Daquan Davis pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated manslaughter. In return, Atlantic County prosecutors will recommend that he receive a 12-year sentence when he's sentenced Oct. 25.

Prosecutors say the 20-year-old Atlantic City man was caring for the 6-month-old boy while the child's mother was at work last September. When she returned home and found the boy was unresponsive, she called 911.

The child was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities have said the boy died from acute cerebral spinal trauma.

Davis said he shook the baby after becoming frustrated because it would not stop crying.

In an exclusive NBC10 interview the child’s mother, Ebony Stewart, described the horrific discovery she made when she returned home last September.

“I noticed my son wasn’t breathing. I looked closer and he wasn’t breathing. His face was purple and frozen cold.”

Stewart says Davis acted as if nothing happened.

“He sat there saying ‘everything will be alright…we’re in this together…I know you’re hurting. I am here for you,'” Stewart said.
