Driver Smashes 21 Cars in Fairmount

Mystery remains as to what caused the blocks of wreckage

"It just sounded like shards of metal falling."

That's how one neighbor described what he heard when a out-of-control Chrysler sedan hit nearly two dozen cars on a narrow street in the Fairmount section of the city late Wednesday night.

Investigators say the 23-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle he was driving and struck 21 parked cars before coming to a stop at 19th and Poplar Streets.

"It was like 20 cars in a row, I don't even know how it happened," victim Gitau Kaggia told NBC10's Tim Furlong.

"I heard a big boom," said a second victim.

"...Sounded like an 18 wheeler," said another.

Police tell NBC10 that the driver was passed out when they got to the scene. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where he remained in stable condition late Thursday afternoon.

Police say speed may have been a factor but what else caused the unidentified driver to careen out of control wasn't clear. Investigators were awaiting toxicology results and also looking into a possible medical event being responsible for the wreck.
