Man Gets Life Sentence for Strangling Woman

A New Jersey man who was convicted of strangling a woman and stealing items from her home before setting it on fire two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey says 48-year-old Harpal Singh of Carteret must serve nearly 64 years of the sentence imposed Monday before he becomes eligible for parole.

Singh was convicted earlier this year of felony murder, aggravated manslaughter, robbery, aggravated arson and hindering his apprehension in the February 2011 death of 44-year-old Balwinder Kaur. Prosecutors say Singh broke into Kaur's Woodbridge home and stole cash and jewelry before setting the home on fire.

Firefighters found Kaur inside the burning home and brought her outside. But she was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
