Man Drowns Trying to Swim Across Schuylkill River: Police

State police say a man drowned near Peace Rock while trying to swim across the Schuylkill River in eastern Pennsylvania.

The Berks County coroner says the victim is 26-year-old Essam Saba, of Allentown.

Crews were called to the river in Windsor Township shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday. The man was taken to Penn State Health St. Joseph Hospital where he died shortly before 3 p.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner John Hollenbach says an autopsy found evidence consistent with fresh water drowning, but investigators are holding off on a final cause and manner of death until results of toxicology and other tests are complete. That usually takes a few weeks.

Witnesses tell police the man entered the river at a beach and began struggling while swimming across the river.[[388157722,C]]
