Man Admits Assaulting Officers in Stolen Car

A northern New Jersey man accused of injuring two police officers while fleeing in a stolen car has pleaded guilty to numerous counts.

Union County prosecutors announced Tuesday that 28-year-old Antoine Trent of Newark has pleaded guilty to two counts each of aggravated assault while eluding police and motor vehicle theft. He faces a 16-year state prison term when he's sentenced later this year.

The guilty pleas entered Monday stemmed from an April 2011 incident in Union Township.

Authorities say Trent and another man stole a vehicle in Jersey City, then drove to Union and stole another car. As they sat in the latter vehicle, two police officers saw damage to the car and learned through a computer check that the car had been stolen.

As the officers approached the vehicle, Trent used a screwdriver to start the car and backed-up while one of the officers was still partially in the vehicle. Trent then pulled away, striking the second officer and sideswiping other vehicles before crashing into another car.

The officer who was partially in the car suffered fractured vertebrae, while the second officer had a sprained knee. The officers and Trent were taken to hospitals for treatment of their injuries and have since recovered.
