Main Break Floods Busy Fishtown Street, Dried Up Service

Water gushed up through the asphalt along Girard Avenue on Sunday morning after a main broke below the street.

The 12-inch water main began leaking around 2 a.m. near Montgomery Avenue in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia, a spokesman with the Philadelphia Water Department said.

Water service was shut off to approximately 100 properties in the area for hours as a result. Service was restored around 7 a.m. as replacement work began.

PWD officials said crews will work throughout the day to swap out the main. Work is expected to be finished Sunday afternoon.

Girard Avenue westbound is closed from Berks to Master Streets because of the emergency construction.
