Mailbox Explodes at Home of NJ Freeholder

Police are investigating a soda bottle bomb explosion at the home of Freeholder Larry Wallace

A metal mailbox exploded at the home of Gloucester County Freeholder Larry Wallace. The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and Woolwich Township Police are investigating.

NBC10 talked to Wallace who says he believes the bomb went off between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m Thursday.

"I was horrified at first, I couldn't believe that someone would take the time to blow up my mailbox. But after thinking about it and looking at the destruction, I realize that I think that this was a bit more than just some kid's prank," said Wallace.

He didn't hear the boom and says he's not sure why someone would pick his home and his mailbox.

"It happened here in my home with my wife and kids in bed and god forbid if the device would have malfunctioned somehow and rather than blowing up in the middle of the night, it blew up when someone was opening the box, it really could have caused a lot of harm to my family," said Wallace.

Police determined it was a soda bottle bomb that blew up the mailbox  and say this type of bomb can be deadly.

No similar types of explosions have happened in this neighborhood.
