The off-duty officer told Lumberton Township Police that he saw something suspicious in the area of Bobby’s Run Development just before 1 a.m. Sunday and his police instinct kicked in as he investigated.

The officer, who police didn’t identify, said he approached a car because the driver appeared to be using drugs.

The officer identified himself and told the man to drop the drugs but the man, who police later identified as Mark Miller, 43, of Oceana, W.V., refused, according to police.

As the officer tried to take the keys from the ignition of the car, police say Miller sped off while the officer’s arm was still inside the window.

The officer was dragged for a short distance and suffered a minor abrasion, according to investigators.

Police later arrested Miller about 12 miles away in Pemberton Township and charged him with assault by auto. Miller was set to Burlington County Jail on $1,500 bail.
