Local Car Dealer Sentenced for False Tax Returns

A Philadelphia auto dealer who admitted filing false tax returns has been sentenced to three years of probation, including one year of home confinement.

Forty-five-year-old Gary Barbera of Gladwyne was sentenced Friday in federal court. He pleaded guilty in May to filing false returns in tax years 2003 and 2004 for the car dealership bearing his name.

U.S. District Judge Jan DuBois also ordered Barbera to pay $120,000 restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and a $30,000 fine.

Barbera could have been sentenced to a year in prison. He and his attorneys declined to comment after the court hearing.
