A Little League coach who was accused of hitting a 17-year-old umpire in the head pleaded guilty to assault and now must apologize to the teen.
Thomas Murphy was suspended from the Berkeley Township Little League soon after the May incident that happened in front of boys aged 10 to 12 years old including Murphy's own sons.
“It’s inexcusable,” said Little League president Bob Everett the day after the game. “This is not condoned in any way shape or form.”
The umpire had ejected Murphy from the game after an argument.
Ocean County prosecutor's spokesman Al Della Fave tells the Asbury Park Press Murphy was unaware the ump was a teen when he hit him on the side of the head, causing pain and redness.
Della Fave says in return for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to recommend probation for the 44-year-old. He must also write apologies to the victim and to the Little League.
Murphy can also apply to a program that would erase the conviction if he successfully completes the terms.
