A pair of New Jersey lawmakers are trying to remove sexist language from antiquated state laws.
State Sens. Loretta Weinberg, a Democrat, and Jennifer Beck, a Republican, are sponsoring the measure.
One law says a man and woman must wait at least 72 hours to get married, unless the man was arrested for "bastardy, rape, fornication or of having had carnal knowledge of an unmarried female.'' In that case, officials can waive the waiting period.
Another law says a woman forfeits her property rights to her husband if she's been "ravished,'' unless the husband forgives her and allows her to live with him.
Many of the laws are well-intentioned but no longer relevant, like a 19th century law guaranteeing married women property rights. Those rights are covered by the state constitution and
anti-discrimination laws guaranteeing equal protection.
