A Big Boy Lets Go of His 7,500 Toys

Donald Kaufman's play days aren't exactly over, but when you're pushing 80, maybe it's time to get rid of some of your toys.

Kaufman, the founder of KB Toys, spent nearly 60 years amassing more than 7,500 antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and airplanes. It's considered one of the largest and finest automotive toy collections, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Now he and his wife are selling most of their prized collection at Bertoia Auctions in Vineland, N.J.

"I hope everyone here gets what they came for," Kaufman told bidders at the first auction in March. It raised more than $4 million and attracted collectors from all over the world.

This is the second auction in the series and Kaufman, 78, and his wife Sally wouldn't miss it. You'd think a sentimental guy might have a hard time letting go of all those tiny treasures, but Kaufman's having as much fun selling as he did buying.

"It's like spreading his love and joy, because so much of his time and energy and interest were devoted to building this collection," daughter Judith said.

The auction starts at 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at Bertoia Auctions. You can get directions and check out the collection on their Web site.
