Arrest Made in Deadly Juniata Hit-&-Run

A year later an arrest is made in hit-and-run that killed a 29-year-old woman

More than a year after Liliana Acevedo was struck and killed in Philly's Juniata section, the alleged driver who drove away from the crash is under arrest.

The family and friends of Acevedo held a vigil Tuesday night to mark the arrest of 38-year-old Sylvia Lugo of the 3700 block of Marshall Street.

Lugo was taken into custody early Tuesday night. It is unclear how Philadelphia Police zeroed in on Lugo but they could confirm that she was in custody and charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, manslaughter and other related offenses.

Lugo allegedly struck and killed Acevedo on May 1, 2010 at the corner of 3rd Street and Erie Avenue, according to cops.

Witnesses said at the time that Acevedo was retrieving a bag from her car when suddenly a car came down the road and hit her, killing her almost immediately, according to authorities.

The driver never stopped. Acevedo, who worked in admissions at St. Joseph's Hospital, was 29.

Descriptions of the striking vehicle were given and family members held various vigils to keep alive Acevedo's memory and hopefully bring her alleged killer to justice.

There was a $15000 reward offered for anyone with information that led to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
