Prisoner Dies at James T Vaughn Correctional Center During Prison Uprising, Death Not Suspicious

Inmate dies at Delaware prison, foul play not suspected

The Delaware Department of Correction says an inmate at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna has died but that no foul play is suspected.

The department said in a statement Saturday that 58-year-old Andre R. Thomas was pronounced dead early Thursday at a hospital. The department says Thomas was from Wilmington, Delaware, and serving an 87-year sentence for two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, three counts of reckless endangering, assault in a detention facility and violation of probation. The department says his sentence began in 1998.

The department says Thomas' death was unrelated to the inmate uprising and hostage situation at the prison occurring at the same time, in which a guard died.
