Inmate's Death Ruled Homicide

A death certificate states the death of a Delaware inmate has been ruled a homicide.

The certificate provided Steve Hampton, an attorney representing the family of 48-year-old Ronald Shoup of Lewes, shows that the Sussex Correctional Institution inmate “sustained lethal trauma while being restrained multiple times by prison response team.”

Paperwork filed by the Office of the Medical Examiner shows Shoup was found in an isolated infirmary cell on Feb. 27, a week after arriving at the facility, and was pronounced dead about four hours later. Shoup was being held on multiple charges including drunken driving after failing to post bail.

Delaware State Police confirm that there is an investigation into Shoup's death but declined to comment on details of the investigation or the circumstances surrounding his death.
