A southern New Jersey jail inmate who attacked a corrections officer who wouldn't let him get a haircut has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Authorities say the attack occurred in November 2012, as Clive Hinds was in the Camden County Jail awaiting a verdict in his murder trial. The jury eventually cleared him of murder but convicted him of manslaughter.
Hinds wanted to have his hair cut before the verdict occurred, but the guard said that wasn't possible. Hinds then attacked the officer, and other inmates soon joined in the assault.
Hinds pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was sentenced Friday.
The 22-year-old Maple Shade resident will serve the term consecutively to the 25-year sentence he received for his manslaughter conviction.
The latter conviction stemmed from a case where two people were tortured, killed and left partially buried in a Camden yard in February 2010.
Prosecutors have said 23-year-old Michael Hawkins of Mount Holly was beaten, shot and stabbed at the house, allegedly over a gang dispute and a stolen bottle of liquor.
They say his 18-year-old girlfriend, Muriah Huff of Cinnaminson, was an innocent bystander who had accompanied Hawkins and was killed to stop her from identifying the attackers.
All 10 suspects in the case have pleaded guilty or were convicted by a jury.
