Montco Couple Dies in Maine After Irene

A Montgomery County couple becomes the latest victims of Hurricane Irene

Investigators said Thursday that a deteriorated ventilation system for a propane-fueled generator is to blame for the death of an elderly Montgomery County couple.

The Portland Press Herald is reporting that Elizabeth Somers, 84, was found sitting in a chair in a first-floor bedroom of her summer home on Sebago Lake in Maine on Tuesday. Lewis Somers III, 85, was found in the living room.

The couple--from Lafayette Hill--reportedly inhaled carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator that was running inside their basement, after Hurricane Irene cut off electricity for more than two days, according to reports.

Sheriff Captain Jeff Davis says there were cracks in the flexible metal hose that was being used to vent the fumes from the generator, installed in the 1980s.

Lewis reportedly owned a medical supply company. The couple leaves behind three children.
